Ukraine claims it has shot down a powerful Russian hypersonic missile for the first time – using the Patriot defense system it recently acquired from Western allies.

Air Force Commander Mykola Oleschuk said in a Telegram post that the Kunzal-type ballistic missile was intercepted in an overnight attack on Kiev earlier in the week. “Yes, we shot the ‘unique’ Kunzal,” Mr Oleschuk wrote. “This happened during the nighttime attack on May 4.”

Russia will also skip this year’s Victory Day reception for Vladimir Putin after the annual parade on May 9 – marking the Soviet victory over the Nazis – on a “smaller scale”, Britain’s Ministry of Defense said. Defense said.

Citing security concerns after an attempted drone attack earlier this week, the Kremlin has canceled Victory Day parades in six Russian regions.

The MoD said, “The timing of the UAV attack on the Kremlin just days before Victory Day demonstrates Russia’s heightened vulnerability to such attacks and almost certainly affected the threat perception of the Russian leadership over the Victory Day events. has been extended.”
